A 10yr old Girl's Interesting Question to me
"Doctor, why do we see coloured lights moving inside the eye when we keep a torch on our closed eyes ?"
Her curiosity amazed me and here is a video simulating the colours seen and the mystery behind this.......
Itz called The Entoptic Phenomenon......
Entoptic phenomena are visual effects whose source is within the eye itself. Under suitable conditions light falling on the eye may render visible certain objects within the eye itself. These perceptions are called entoptical.
When a torch is placed on the closed eye it illuminates the inside of the eye and the blood flowing in the vessels and the liquid inside the eye is visible as different colours.
Phosphene
The most common phosphenes are pressure phosphenes, caused by rubbing the closed eyes. They have been known since antiquity, and described by the Greeks.[3] The pressure mechanically stimulates the cells of the retina. Experiences include a darkening of the visual field that moves against the rubbing, a diffuse colored patch that also moves against the rubbing, a scintillating and ever-changing and deforming light grid with occasional dark spots (like a crumpling fly-spotted flyscreen), and a sparse field of intense blue points of light.

Mahatama is Obama's Hero !!
An article from The Hindu, Chennai,10th Sep 09.
Washington : US President barack Obama has said if given a chance he would like to have a meal with his real hero Mahatama Gandhi although the apostle of peace did not eat a lot.
Mr. Obama's response came to a question from a ninth grader at the Wakefield High school an Virginia, who asked him if he could have diner with anyone dead or alive who would it be.
"Dinner with anyone dead or alive ? Well you know dead or alive, that's a pretty big list", he said amidst laughter. "You know, I think that it might be Gandhi who is a real hero of mine', Mr Obama said.
He said Gandhi was someone who has inspired people across the world for the past several generations. He had inspired Dr. Martin Luther King so if it hadn't been for the non violent movement in india you might have not sen the same non vioent movement for civil rghts here in the United States, he said.
Gandhiji, Obama said ended up changing the world just by the power of his ethics." I am always interested in people who are able to bring about change, not through violence, not through money, but through the force of their personality and ethical and moral stances. I would love to sit down and talk to him.

A Great Gandhian dies after 21 day fast.........My deepest condolences
Living a life that matters - An Inspiring Poem Sent by my friends Dr. Buror & Dr. Rita
by Michael Josephson used with permission of the author Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won't matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end. It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant. So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured? What will matter is not what you bought but what you built, not what you got but what you gave. What will matter is not your success but your significance. What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught. What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage, or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged others to emulate your example. What will matter is not your competence but your character. What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when your gone. What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live in those who loved you. What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what. Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident. It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice. Choose to live a life that matters. |

THIRUKKURAL COUPLET
1. In Praise of God
GANPATI BAPPA MORYA !!
On this auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi my wishes and prayers for all of you. May Ganesha bring love, joy and prosperity in your lives and give you all the strength to be positive in life.
Today morning we brought Ganesha to Adityajyot with all fanfare and rituals as we set up our pandal for this Ganesh Utsav based on the noble theme of eye donation. The heavy rains could not dampen our spirits as we held a Puja attended by all my staff, family and friends seeking the blessings of Ganesha. We plan to hold special prayers everyday till Sep 2nd invoking the God almighty to shower his blessings upon us.
This is the first time we have set up a Ganesh Pandal at Adityajyot and it is but a small gesture to thank him and a chance for us to serve him during this holy period. I also hope to promote eye donation on this occassion and inspire people with the Kannpan Nayanar story to come forward and pledge their eyes.
Today is a day marked by an amazing confluence of faiths as today also marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan......My best wishes to all.........

ADITYA JYOT CELEBRATES GANAPATHI UTSAV WITH EYE DONATION AS A THEME FOR 2009
OUR BACKDROP FOR THIS YEAR DEPICTS VERY GRAPHICALLY THE STORY OF KANNAPA NAYANAR WHO WAS A STAUNCH DEVOTEE OF LORD SHIVA .
THIS COLOURFUL DEPICTION HAS BEEN CREATED BY TWO YOUNG ARTISTS FROM JJ SCHOOL OF ART WHO SPENT LONG HOURS AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS CREATING THIS MASTER PIECE.
THINNAN , DHEERAN MORE FAMOUSLY KNOWN AS KANNAPA NAYANAR WAS ONE OF THE 63 SAINTS WHO WORSHIPPED LORD SHIVA.HE FOUND THE VAYU LINGA IN THE FOREST WHILST HE WAS HUNTING.SINCE HE WAS ILLETERATE AND FROM A LOW CASTE HE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO WORSHIP LORD SHIVA.
THE STORY GOES THAT HE BROUGHT WATER IN HIS MOUTH FROM A NEARBY RIVER AND POURED IT OVER THE SHIVA LINGAM.HE ALSO OFFERED WHATEVER ANIMAL HE HUNTED. SHIVA ACCEPTED IT AS HE KNEW THINNAN WAS PURE AT HEARTS AND HIS DEVOTION WAS TRUE
ONE DAY LORD SHIVA WABTED TO TEST THE DEVOTION OF THINNAN.HE CAUSED AN EARTHQUAKE AND THE TREMORS CAUSED THE ROOF TOPS OF THE TEMPLE TO FALL.ALL THE SAGES RAN AWAY EXCEPT THINNAN WHO COVERED THE LINGA WITH HIS BODY TO PREVENT DAMAGE.HENCE HE WAS NAMED DHEERAN
ONE DAY THINNAN ALSO KNOWN AS DHEERAN NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE EYES OF THE SHIVA LINGA WAS OZZING BLOOD AND TEARS.SENSING THAT THE LORD’S EYE WAS INJURED DHEERAN PLUCKED OUT ONE OF HIS EYES WITH HIS ARROW AND PLACED IT ON THE BLEEDING EYE AND LO AND BEHOLD LORD SHIVA’S EYE STOPPED BLEEDING.BUT THE TRAUMA WAS NOT OVER YET AS DHEERAN SAW TO HIS HORROR THAT LORD SHIVA’S OTHER EYE ALSO STARTED BLEEDING.DHEERAN THOUGHT THAT IF HE WERE TO PLUCK HIS OTHER EYE TOO HE WOULD TURN BLIND AND NOT KNOW WHERE TO PLACE THE OTHER EYE.SO HE CLEVERLY PLACED HIS GREAT BIG TOE ON THE LINGA TO MARK THE SPOT OF THE BLEEDING SECOND EYE AND BEGAN TO PLUCK OUT HIS ONLY OTHER EYE.
SHIVA WAS GREATLY MOVED BY THIS DEVOTION AND CRIED OUT”NILLU KANAPPA’STOP KANNAPA AND RESTORED BOTH HIS EYES.
YOU WILL SEE THIS MOVING STORY SO VIVIDLY PAINTED IN TYPICAL TANJORE ART FORM AND COLOURS BY THE YOUNG ARTISTS
ADITYA JYOT’S MISSION IS TO RESTORE EYESIGHT,VISION AND PLAY ITS HUMBLE PART IN REDUCING BLINDNESS AND IMPROVING EYE CARE IN THIS COUNTRY.
IT ALSO PROMOTES EYE DONATION.OUR SLOGAN ‘DON’T BURY,DON’T BURN,DONATE YOUR EYES’HAS HAD SEVERAL THOUSANDS PLEDGE THEIR EYES FOR POSTERITY
LETS HOLD HANDS THEREFORE AND VENERATE LORD GANESHA THAT HE BLESSES US TO FULFILL OUR DREAMS OF PROVIDING SIGHT TO ALL THOSE WHO NEED IT.
