Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama  "For Extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people"

Describing himself as surprised and deeply humbled, Obama said he would accept the award as a "call to action" to confront the global challenges of the 21st century.

"I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments but rather an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations," he said in the White House Rose Garden.

The president, who will travel to Oslo to receive the award on Dec. 10, plans to donate the prize money of 10 million Swedish crowns -- roughly $1.4 million -- to charity, the White House said

Obama who has been deeply inspired by Gandhi  has always been an inspiration to me and i am a firm follower of his "Yes we can" motto.......

EID MUBARAK !!

Eid ul-Fitr (Arabicعيد الفطر ‘Īdu ul-Fiṭr‎), often abbreviated to Eid,  that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiṭr means "to break fast"; and so the holiday symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period

The Gandhian Philosophy of Customer Satsfaction - Our Patient Service Motto

A customer (Patient) is the most important visitor on our premises, he is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do so.

A 10yr old Girl's Interesting Question to me

A 10 yr old girl asked me yesterday :
"Doctor, why do we see coloured lights moving inside the eye when we keep a torch on our closed eyes ?"

Her curiosity amazed me and here is a video simulating the colours seen and the mystery behind this.......
Itz called The Entoptic Phenomenon......

Entoptic phenomena are visual effects whose source is within the eye itself. Under suitable conditions light falling on the eye may render visible certain objects within the eye itself. These perceptions are called entoptical.

When a torch is placed on the closed eye it illuminates the inside of the eye and the blood flowing in the vessels and the liquid inside the eye is visible as different colours.

Phosphene

phosphene is an entoptic phenomenon characterized by the experience of seeing light without light actually entering the eye. The word phosphene comes from the Greek words phos (light) and phainein (to show).[1] Phosphenes can be directly induced by mechanical, electrical, or magnetic stimulation of the retina or visual cortex as well as by random firing of cells in the visual system. Phosphenes have also been reported by meditators,[2] people who go for long periods without visual stimulation (also known as the prisoner's cinema) or who are under the influence of drugs, especially a hallucinogen.

The most common phosphenes are pressure phosphenes, caused by rubbing the closed eyes. They have been known since antiquity, and described by the Greeks.[3] The pressure mechanically stimulates the cells of the retina. Experiences include a darkening of the visual field that moves against the rubbing, a diffuse colored patch that also moves against the rubbing, a scintillating and ever-changing and deforming light grid with occasional dark spots (like a crumpling fly-spotted flyscreen), and a sparse field of intense blue points of light.

The name "phosphene" was coined by JBH Savigny, better known as the ship's surgeon of the wrecked Medusa.[7] It was first employed by Serre d'Uzes to test retinal function prior to cataract surgery.[8]

Most vision researchers believe that phosphenes result from the normal activity of the visual system after stimulation of one of its parts from some stimulus other than light.

Mahatama is Obama's Hero !!

An article from The Hindu, Chennai,10th Sep 09.

Washington : US President barack Obama has said if given a chance he would like to have a meal with his real hero Mahatama Gandhi although the apostle of peace did not eat a lot.

Mr. Obama's response came to a question from a ninth grader at the Wakefield High school an Virginia, who asked him if he could have diner with anyone dead or alive who would it be.

"Dinner with anyone dead or alive ? Well you know dead or alive, that's a pretty big list", he said amidst laughter. "You know, I  think that it might be Gandhi who is a real hero of mine', Mr Obama said.

He said Gandhi was someone who has inspired people across the world for the past several generations. He had inspired Dr. Martin Luther King so if it hadn't been for the non violent movement in india you might have not sen the same non vioent movement for civil rghts here in the United States, he said.

Gandhiji, Obama said ended up changing the world just by the power of his ethics." I am always interested in people who are able to bring about change, not through violence, not through money, but through the force of their personality and ethical and moral stances. I would love to sit down and talk to him.

Living a life that matters - An Inspiring Poem Sent by my friends Dr. Buror & Dr. Rita

What Will Matter?

by Michael Josephson
used with permission of the author

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days.
All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten
will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance.
It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges, resentments, frustrations
and jealousies will finally disappear.
So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won't matter where you came from
or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won't matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant.
Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.
So what will matter?
How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought
but what you built, not what you got but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success
but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned
but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity,
compassion, courage, or sacrifice
that enriched, empowered or encouraged others
to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence
but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew,
but how many will feel a lasting loss when your gone.
What will matter is not your memories
but the memories that live in those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered,
by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn't happen by accident.
It's not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.

THIRUKKURAL COUPLET

Thiruvalluvar was a celebrated Tamil poet who wrote the Thirukkural, a work on ethics in Tamil literature. Thiruvalluvar's period is between the second century BC and the eighth century AD.

Thirukkural is the masterpiece of Tamil literature with the highest and purest expressions of human thought. It is written in the form of couplets (two line poems) expounding various aspects of life. It contains 1330 couplets, divided into 133 chapters of 10 couplets each.
Thirukkural was written by Thiruvalluvar, who is believed to have born 30 years before Jesus Christ. The Tamil Calendar is dated from that period and referred as Thiruvalluvar Aandu (Year). We find Thiruvalluvar as a moral philosopher, political scientist and master of public administration in the first two parts of Thirukkural. We find him to be a creative artist in the third part, depicting the fascinating aspects of lovers.

Thirukkural's immortality and universality are unquestionable. Its ethics and values are applicable to all religions, countries and time. It has been translated in over 60 languages of the world.

1. In Praise of God

"Akara mutala elutellam; ati
Pakavan mutarre ulaku."
The alphabet begins with 'A';
So does the Universe with God.
Just as the letter 'A' begins and energises all the other letters of the alphabet, God is the origin and sustenance of the universe.

GANPATI BAPPA MORYA !!

On this auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi my wishes and prayers for all of you. May Ganesha bring love, joy and prosperity in your lives and give you all the strength to be positive in life.

Today morning we brought Ganesha to Adityajyot with all fanfare and rituals as we set up our pandal for this Ganesh Utsav based on the noble theme of eye donation. The heavy rains could not dampen our spirits as we held a Puja attended by all my staff, family and friends seeking the blessings of  Ganesha. We plan to hold special prayers everyday  till Sep 2nd invoking the God almighty to shower his blessings upon us.

This is the first time we have set up a Ganesh Pandal at Adityajyot and it is but a small gesture to thank him and a chance for us to serve him during this holy period. I also hope to promote eye donation  on this occassion and inspire people with the Kannpan Nayanar story to come forward and pledge their eyes.

Today is a day marked by an amazing confluence of faiths as today also marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan......My best wishes to all.........

ADITYA JYOT CELEBRATES GANAPATHI UTSAV WITH EYE DONATION AS A THEME FOR 2009

EYE DONATION IN HINDU MYTHOLOGY

OUR BACKDROP FOR THIS YEAR DEPICTS VERY GRAPHICALLY THE STORY OF KANNAPA NAYANAR WHO WAS A STAUNCH DEVOTEE OF LORD SHIVA .

THIS COLOURFUL DEPICTION HAS BEEN CREATED BY TWO YOUNG ARTISTS FROM JJ SCHOOL OF ART WHO SPENT LONG HOURS AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS CREATING THIS MASTER PIECE.

THINNAN , DHEERAN MORE FAMOUSLY KNOWN AS KANNAPA NAYANAR WAS ONE OF THE 63 SAINTS WHO WORSHIPPED LORD SHIVA.HE FOUND THE VAYU LINGA IN THE FOREST WHILST HE WAS HUNTING.SINCE HE WAS ILLETERATE AND FROM A LOW CASTE HE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO WORSHIP LORD SHIVA.

THE STORY GOES THAT HE BROUGHT WATER IN HIS MOUTH FROM A NEARBY RIVER AND POURED IT OVER THE SHIVA LINGAM.HE ALSO OFFERED WHATEVER ANIMAL HE HUNTED. SHIVA ACCEPTED IT AS HE KNEW THINNAN WAS PURE AT HEARTS AND HIS DEVOTION WAS TRUE

ONE DAY LORD SHIVA WABTED TO TEST THE DEVOTION OF THINNAN.HE CAUSED AN EARTHQUAKE AND THE TREMORS CAUSED THE ROOF TOPS OF THE TEMPLE TO FALL.ALL THE SAGES RAN AWAY EXCEPT THINNAN WHO COVERED THE LINGA WITH HIS BODY TO PREVENT DAMAGE.HENCE HE WAS NAMED DHEERAN

ONE DAY THINNAN ALSO KNOWN AS DHEERAN NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE EYES OF THE SHIVA LINGA WAS OZZING BLOOD AND TEARS.SENSING THAT THE LORD’S EYE WAS INJURED DHEERAN PLUCKED OUT ONE OF HIS EYES WITH HIS ARROW AND PLACED IT ON THE BLEEDING EYE AND LO AND BEHOLD LORD SHIVA’S EYE STOPPED BLEEDING.BUT THE TRAUMA WAS NOT OVER YET AS DHEERAN SAW TO HIS HORROR THAT LORD SHIVA’S OTHER EYE ALSO STARTED BLEEDING.DHEERAN THOUGHT THAT IF HE WERE TO PLUCK HIS OTHER EYE TOO HE WOULD TURN BLIND AND NOT KNOW WHERE TO PLACE THE OTHER EYE.SO HE CLEVERLY PLACED HIS GREAT BIG TOE ON THE LINGA TO MARK THE SPOT OF THE BLEEDING SECOND EYE AND BEGAN TO PLUCK OUT HIS ONLY OTHER EYE.

SHIVA WAS GREATLY MOVED BY THIS DEVOTION AND CRIED OUT”NILLU KANAPPA’STOP KANNAPA AND RESTORED BOTH HIS EYES.

YOU WILL SEE THIS MOVING STORY SO VIVIDLY PAINTED IN TYPICAL TANJORE ART FORM AND COLOURS BY THE YOUNG ARTISTS

ADITYA JYOT’S MISSION IS TO RESTORE EYESIGHT,VISION AND PLAY ITS HUMBLE PART IN REDUCING BLINDNESS AND IMPROVING EYE CARE IN THIS COUNTRY.

IT ALSO PROMOTES EYE DONATION.OUR SLOGAN ‘DON’T BURY,DON’T BURN,DONATE YOUR EYES’HAS HAD SEVERAL THOUSANDS PLEDGE THEIR EYES FOR POSTERITY

LETS HOLD HANDS THEREFORE AND VENERATE LORD GANESHA THAT HE BLESSES US TO FULFILL OUR DREAMS OF PROVIDING SIGHT TO ALL THOSE WHO NEED IT.

MY APPEAL TO ALL FOR EYE DONATION

Ms. Aishwarya Rai had inaugurated our Eye bank on the 1st of August 2004
The cornea, which is the transparent portion of the eye or a button in front of the colored iris and round pupil of the eye, is a surface, which converges the light rays to focus on the retina. Loss of transparency in the cornea results in blindness, which can be cured by corneal transplant. This surgery involves replacing the damaged cornea by a cornea from a donated eye. There are 15 million cases of this type of blindness out of which 4.6 million are less than 45 yrs and 60% less than 12 yrs. The demand for this corneal tissue is far greater than its supply.

We have a qualified team of Doctors and Medical personnel who go and collect donated eyes round the clock and we have collected over 50 eyes last year. Eyes are then sent to a coordination center for processing and distribution.
We have requested eminent personalities from all fields of life to come together and participate in this noble venture of promoting eye donation. We would urge you to come forward and support us in our mission of spreading the awareness towards eye donation.
